HOME – MIND FIRST
Mental health is a crucial aspect of overall well-being, affecting individuals, families, and communities. In Sri Lanka, like many other countries, mental health issues pose significant challenges that require attention and comprehensive understanding.
Since its inception, the rapid evolution of modern technology and advancements in communication have significantly impacted human behavior within a short period. This, in turn, has had a direct effect on mental health. The proliferation of communication media enables instantaneous dissemination of global events, thus ensuring that Sri Lankans are exposed to the effects of worldwide happenings. However, the identification and prevention of these effects necessitate individual actions specific to each country. In the context of Sri Lanka, characterized by distinct cultural and educational frameworks, it becomes imperative to adopt a unique approach in addressing this matter.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 20% of Sri Lankans are affected bymental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, and substance abuse. The National Institute of Mental Health in Sri Lanka estimates that around 4 million people in the country suffer from mentalhealth disorders. Depression is one of the most common mental health disorders in Sri Lanka, affecting approximately 7% of the population.
Sri Lanka has one of the highest suicide rates globally, with an estimated 14.2 suicides per 100,000 people, according to the WHO.
The prevalence of suicide is particularly high among adolescents and young adults. The suicide rate in this age group is around 18.8 per 100,000 people.
